Disbelief. Disappointment. Disillusion.

A few days ago, I had an article published in Parabol Press, a Swedish online publication, about the US election. I went a bit deeper into the segmentation of this huge democracy, and highlighted gerrymandering and the Electoral College as two significant components or the election process, but also often misunderstood – or not understood at all – by outsiders.

At the time, just a few days ago, we were still filled with hope. Hope that the country would join the rest of the world and look forward, together, inviting people of all creeds and kinds to participate in and contribute to the biggest experiment of democracy ever conceived.

But we were mistaken. The repercussions will be devastating, far reaching, and ongoing. For generations. On the courts, in the schools, and for our environment. For the world as we know it.

Today, we have to come to terms with a future president who hates immigrants, who disrespects women, who thinks people are not equal, and who wants to dismantle the U.S. Constitution; a president who previously was driven by greed but now is driven by revenge. In his own words, “there will be retribution”.

I am sad to have to admit that there are many like him out there. Who believe that we are not given the right to pursue our lives as we see fit. The values I trusted and respected seem no longer valid.

As a woman, I am disappointed in women who voted for him: he has taken away the right for women to decide over their own bodies, which is the fundamental right for how we can live our lives. Self-determination is no longer awarded American women.

A blog on emotions and their impact and effects in our lives, not only as we consider happiness and fortunes, but also our misgivings and grievances, this post is a personal reflection in a time in a state of utter disbelief. And sadness. But as many times before, I have known when things are completely irrational, unreal and incomprehensible, so this event should not come as a surprise.

We will prevail. We will regroup. We will resurrect.

To be continued.
